Family Businesses and Nonprofits
Family Business and Nonprofits
We have been exploring the connection between family businesses and nonprofits. We work with a variety of nonprofits and family businesses and we have noticed a connection between the two that allows us to work more efficiently.
The Labor Connection with Legacy and Mission
Nonprofits depend on volunteer labor to get things done until they can become a staffed organization. Similarly, family run organizations are running off of family support that is not measured until they can grow beyond it. There are family expectations of providing support to the organization out of family obligation similar to nonprofits. These Expectations aren’t the same reason volunteers are signing up to volunteer, but the similar external needed to fulfill the mission is there. Both external forces provide a consistent inflow of labor to organizations which creates often unsustainable revenue projections and growth expectations. This is often where Base Builder Labs comes in. We equip leaders with the skills to continue to leverage that support while remaining aware that the lack of clarity and written agreements in those relationships can be dangerous.
Legacy and Mission
Both family run organizations and nonprofit have a more deeply personal connection that leads to more motivated people which makes everyone more resilient to challenges. This can lead to more cycles of burnout, but when you are aware of that you can prevent it.
What does it all mean?
If you work with family run organizations or nonprofits you should be going into most days with an abundance mindset when it comes to people because people have so much to give, but a healthy bit of caution because without documentation it can all come crashing down.
